Miss V going to W (part of FRINGE CINEMA/ FRINGE BIO)

Miss V Going to W" was originally a short film called Miss V. The idea of making Miss V coming from an accident, or coincidence, the idea first came while shooting other films in Tokyo film lab at some serious typhoon days and on the streets rain was pouring like crazy. But funny enough, as we random strangers had to stop underneath the massive buildings to hide from the rain, we had to look at one another closely. This was the first time I can look straight in the eyes of a stranger here, instead of just being another blurry passer-by.

While hiding in the pedestrian zone from the thunderstorms,
I can't help but wonder about the asian-ness in me and the western-ness in me, how they gaze at others and how others being gazed at. How they think of me and who I am, here and there. The relationship between the gazer and the gazed. The angle we look at others is like the angle of the camera. When we just go face-front, that's all we see. Or do we see it all?

Identity issues have been a recurring theme in all my work. These years it has been center-focused in female identity, the female gaze. How women being looked at, how a female performer/actress being looked at? How she is judged first by society and then eventually she started to judge herself.

"Am I pretty?" she whispers inside. At the same time, one wonders whether it is just a performance recorded on screen or is she performing herself or performing a character or who? Why Miss V? Who is Miss V? Who or what is W? Is it standing for "womanhood" or “whereabouts” or? what does it mean? This leaves audiences to ponder about themselves.

More info:

* "Miss V Going to W" is last part of the Trilogy series I intended to make during a long period of my life. It is not a documentary, and it can be viewed seperately from the other two short films. This film coincidentally happens right at the end of one long period of my life, and fresh beginning of a new phrase. It was also the reason why I re-edited the orginal version to the new 2023 version.

I also make all my films in the idea that it can be used for stage or live performances, like expanded cinema.

*There will be an online artists talk, where artists involved in the projects will be there. Welcome to join us!
